Nget Ren

An old lady stands outside in front of a hut, wearing pajama layered with a suit and looking off into the distance. The sun is shining brightly on her face as she takes in the beauty of her surroundings. In the background, lush green grass covers the ground while tall trees reach up towards the sky above them. A few palm tree leaves can be seen scattered around near where she stands, we walked towards her. We introduced ourselves as DC-Cam Volunteers and workers and asked for her permission to share us her life experiences. She agreed and welcomed us in. Her name is Nget Ren, 78 years old living Bak Nim village, Kampot province. She has been providing for her family since, even if her currently living state is poor. She said she had never received any justice or compensation for what she had suffered. She said she still had nightmares and flashbacks of the past. She said she felt lonely and hopeless most of the time. She still has a memory of how she felt when she went through the Khmer rouge. She was so upset thinking about how her family was tormented. We listened to her with empathy and respect. We asked her some questions to clarify some details or to encourage her to express her feelings. We thanked her for sharing her story with us said our goodbyes and left her house with gifts and gratitude.
