Un Nou

Un Nou is a 71-year-old woman who dedicates her time to caring for her grandchildren in the comfort of her own home. During the Khmer Rouge era, she was a mother of approximately four children and adhered to the orders of the regime. Nou has resided in Bak Nim village for nearly 27 years and has experienced memory loss over time, making it difficult to recall the specifics of her time during the Khmer Rouge era. Nonetheless, she remains deeply affected by the tragic loss of her older brother, who was falsely accused and suffered a cruel fate under the regime. The pain of this loss continues to haunt Nou to this day. During the Khmer Rouge regime, Nou was tasked with building dams in Mlech for a period of around three months. She was transferred to various villages throughout her time under the regime and observed appalling acts of violence, such as individuals being bound together and executed by soldiers. The harsh realities of Nou’s experiences included being overworked, deprived of sleep and food, and constantly subjected to oppression. Despite the toll that the Khmer Rouge regime had taken on her life and the hardships she had endured, Nou persevered and continues to lead a fulfilling life caring for her grandchildren. The memory of her brother serves as a constant reminder of the atrocities committed during that time and the importance of cherishing freedom and peace.
