Chann Ret

DC-Cam volunteers proceeded along a narrow path to fulfill their mission of conducting interviews with survivors of the Khmer Rouge residing in Bak Nim village, located in Kampot province. The radiant sun beamed overhead while a brisk wind gently tousled their hair. Upon reaching one survivor’s dwelling, they cordially introduced themselves and explained the purpose of their visit. Chann Ret, a 67-year-old survivor and current small business owner, recounted her experiences during the Khmer Rouge regime. She was assigned arduous tasks, such as heavy labor at the Mlech dam and working in various communes as part of the mobile unit brigade. Fleeing from the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge, she sought refuge in the mountains, but the pursuit of safety proved to be an unending cycle, as the Khmer Rouge continued their indiscriminate killings of innocent civilians. Following the liberation in 1979, she returned to her hometown briefly before settling in Bak Nim village, where she resides to this day.
